The Bastogne wind farm (Luxembourg Province, Belgium) consists of three wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 6 MW. Together, they generate approximately 11 GWh of green electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of around 3,800 households.
The Bastogne wind farm is an example of how a wind energy project can be supported through equity investment, in collaboration with an investment company. In this project, the investment company SOPAER (*) invested in the project’s equity from the moment the wind farm was connected to the grid and became a minority shareholder.
* SOPAER – Société de Participation dans le secteur de l’Énergie Renouvelable – is an investment company owned by two intermunicipal companies from Luxembourg Province.
Key characteristics of equity investment:
- Active involvement of the shareholder
- A tangible investment in a local and sustainable project
- Higher risk profile and a more complex investment structure
- Returns dependent on the project’s performance
Citizens indirectly share in the economic benefits through dividends that flow to the municipalities.
